Sharmila Faooqui announced 1,000 educational kits for children across Sindh

Karachi:Two-year-old Aisha, the daughter of one of the inmates at the womens prison Karachi, seemed fascinated with the new colourful kit that has arrived at her school and through which her teachers will teach her now onwards.

The Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister, Sharmila Faooqui, has announced 1,000 educational kits (Pehla Taleemi Basta) for children across Sindh starting from the children of women inmates at the central prison Karachi where she donated the first kit from her personal funds during a visit to the womens prison on Tuesday.

There are 18 children in the womens section of the prison. Nine of them are below the age of six. They will now be taught with the help of their first educational kit.

The educational kit, which is a product of Teachers Resource Centre (TRC), makes the process of learning interesting and fun for children, observed Farooqui. Made up of cloth, comprising various pockets, the kit offers multiple activities of language, mathematics, science and art. The best part is that you do not need any infrastructure, school or qualified teachers, even stationery to make kids learn through this process, she said. The adviser said that stress is always laid on the primary and higher level education while early childhood education has been neglected so far.

Farooqui said that the ECE needed to be promoted in the public sector, adding that this programme was part of the same.

The target of the programme are street children who otherwise fall victim to bad habits and get infected with diseases due to their lifestyle, Farooqui told The News.

The distribution of bags would start from Lyari and Gadap towns in the city, specifically targeting the neighbourhoods with relatively more children of the specified age group, she said. The cost of a single kit is RS3,750, Farooqui disclosed, adding that she had requested the DCOs of Sindh districts to come forward and join hands in the programme.
