DEPARTMENT OF CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION & INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGYPunjab Institue of Cardiology Lahore
Angiography is the study of blood vessels and organs by injecting contrast medium (x-ray dye) into arteries or veins.
Department of Cardiac Catheterization & Interventional Cardiology at PIC is the site of many life-saving procedures. It includes 4 State-of-the-Art Catheterization Laboratories and offers the latest in heart disease diagnostic procedures to inpatients and outpatients.

Performing both inpatient and outpatient studies, we perform over 9,000 procedures per year. These procedures are done by both the traditional femoral (leg) approach and the newer radial (wrist) approach. Diagnostic catheterization is the primary procedure performed in the laboratories which, depending on the patient’s situation, may lead to one or more of a variety of interventional options. Interventional services offered to patients include coronary angioplasty, intracoronary stenting, and valvuloplasty. Prompt surgical backup from our world-class surgical team is available for all procedures, though seldom necessary.
The department specializes in non-surgical interventions to treat diseases of the coronary and peripheral arteries. Its physicians offer a premier program providing the latest techniques to open or clear blockages in the coronary and peripheral arteries, such as balloon angioplasty with Stents. They have also played a leading role in the development of new methods to prevent blockages from reoccurring (re-stenosis), a common problem following angioplasty or placement of a Stent. The interventional and endovascular cardiology team also performs Stenting of the carotid arteries, an investigational procedure used to prevent or treat stroke. They also use non-surgical techniques to treat many heart valve problems, as well as congenital abnormalities.
Procedures in the catheterization labs include balloon angioplasty and angioplasty with Stents (miniature scaffolds to hold open an artery) to unblock closed coronary arteries, Peripheral Angioplasty & Stenting, Percutaneous Transvenous Mitral Commissurotomy (PTMC), Pulmonary and Aortic Valvulopalsty, PDA and ASD closure with different devices, treatment of Coarctation of Aorta with balloons and Stents

Our angiography team consists of interventional cardiologists, specially trained in their field. Our team also includes nurses, medical radiation technologists, clerical and assistant staff.
