Gomal University Dera Ismail Khan Students Protest

ISLAMABAD: Tribal students from Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, staged a protest demonstration here on Tuesday demanding to waive the fee of the students affected in the ongoing war on terror South Waziristan Agency and elsewhere in the tribal region.

Dozens of students gathered in front of the National Press Club, holding placards inscribed with demands of remission in their fee and other expenses and chanted slogans in favour of their demand.

Addressing the protesters, students from different tribal regions said that the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) was confronted with numerous crises after the 9/11 including surge in militancy and the military operations. They said that life in their hometowns was totally paralysed and had come to a standstill. “We have lost our near and dear ones while our properties have been damaged,” they recalled.

The protesting students said the entire tribal region was badly affected and the education system was in chaos because of the militancy. They said that in these circumstances the students belonging to the displaced families studying elsewhere in the country were unable to pay their fees and for other expenses. They claimed that the Higher Education Commission had written to the Gomal University administration directing to waive off the dues of the students belonging to the displaced families but no step had been taken in this regard.

The protesters demanded of President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani and elected representatives from Fata to address the legitimate problems of the Fata students. They threatened that otherwise they would be compelled to intensify their protests. The News/Wednesday, May 05, 2010
