FDE Teachers demand permanent

Islamabad:As May 31 nears — the date on which the contracts of female English teachers are to end — teachers working under the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) have demanded permanent status on the basis of their qualification and teaching experience.

The contracts of as many as 122 female English teachers would expire by May 31, while previously, the contracts of male English teachers ended on December 31, 2009, and they are still jobless, seeking some miracle on part of the Ministry of Education high-ups.

In January 2009, orders were issued to give permanent status to contract teachers. A few teachers were given three years for acquiring professional qualifications, including BEd and CT, but after two months on March 25, 2009, orders regarding the permanent status of teachers were taken back.

The teachers working under FDE criticised the relevant authorities and the unjust system, which on one hand reinstates the employees fired during 1995 and 1998 due to government policy and on the other renders hundreds of competent teachers jobless.

According to a statement issued by the English Teachers Association, teachers were again reverted to contract. The contracts of a few teachers were cancelled in June 2009 without any prior notice and they are still teaching without salaries in their respective academic institutions.

“They are just creating vacancies by firing us, as they have already reinstated hundreds of teachers suspended during 1995 and 1998, while they are also hiring fresh teachers, which should not be the case when they already have experienced teachers available,” said a teacher requesting anonymity.

The issue of pending salaries was also raised by the teachers, according to which, the staff of Information Technology at various educational institutions has not received their salaries for eight months. The IT staff, which includes 125 teachers and 162 laboratory in-charges, expressed grave concern over the non-payment of salaries.

According to FDE Director General Shaheen Khan, the directorate has put up the case and would submit it to the Ministry of Finance soon. “We have already forwarded the case of pending salaries of teachers and hopefully, their salaries will be paid before the end of their contractual period,” she said.

She said she has personally taken the matter but the teachers should understand that such matters could not be resolved overnight. “They were on contract and it was written in the contract document that they could be fired from their jobs without any prior notice but still I have a soft corner for them and working hard for their reinstatement,” she said. The News
