LAHORE:DOCTORS and paramedics blocked The Mall on Saturday and held a demonstration and sit-in near the Punjab Assembly to demand an increase in their salaries and a separate pay structure.

The demonstration was held on the call of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), Young Doctors Association (YDA) and paramedicsí representative bodies in which doctors and paramedics from various hospitals of the provincial metropolis participated while a doctorsí delegation from Muzaffargarh was also present.

The demo was led by the office-bearers of Punjab and Lahore chapters of the PMA, including Dr Ashraf Nizami and Dr Yasmin Raashid while YDA office-bearers Dr Rana Sohail, Dr Salman Kazmi, Dr Talha and others were also present.

The protestors were carrying placards and banners while chanting slogans against the government as well as MNA Jamshed Dasti for his alleged involvement in manhandling of doctors in Muzaffargarh.

Speaking on the occasion, PMA and YDA office-bearers criticised the federal and Punjab governments, saying the only way to resolve all the issues was to increase the budget for health sector.

They said that instead of increasing the health budget, the government was decreasing it every year. The young doctors said that they were underpaid and demanded that salary of a house officer be raised to Rs35,000, medical officer/PG traineeís to Rs80,000, senior registrarís to Rs150,000, adding that a special pay package should be given to all doctors. They also demanded the provision of security during duty besides a regular service structure.
