GCU Sets Record with 175 Oratory Awards
Lahore : June 11: THE Debating Society of Government College University (GCUDS), Lahore, has set a new national record by clinching 175 oratory awards at various prestigious national and international competitions during the academic year 2012-13.
It was said in GCUDS Annual Report 2013 published on Monday.
According to a press release, the report highlights that the record 175 awards include 39 coveted team trophies, nine runners-up trophies, three third position trophies, 59 best speaker awards, 38 second position awards, 22 third position and three consolation prizes, won at various declamation, parliamentary, recitation and poetry competitions in English, Urdu and Punjabi languages at both the national and international levels.
In 150 year of GCU, we, the Ravian debaters, have humbly gifted our alma mater 175 oratory awards, which is no doubt unprecedented and therefore the most precious gift that we, as students, could offer,” said GCUDS President Saad-ul-Hassan while commenting on their remarkable achievement.
He attributed the momentous victory to the untiring efforts of the university’s orators and unflinching support and patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman.
Saad said the vice chancellor, being himself a debater throughout his student life, had shown a special interest in debates at GCU.
VC Prof Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that they, at GCU, put a special emphasis on the character-building of the students and encouraged them to participate in sports and co-curricular activities. “Competitive debating has been my favorite since student days as it plays a vital role in intellectual grooming of students. I congratulate the GCU Debating Society on the unprecedented achievement of 175 awards,” he said.
GCUDS Advisor Saddique Awan said the remarkable achievement had been made possible due to the untiring efforts of speakers Saad ul Hasan, Almas Sabeeh Saqib, Zinnia Mansoor, Khawaja Yasin, Hafiz Ali Moeen, Ahmed Chaudhry, Zahid Ali, Awais Malik, Shoaib Ahmed, Umair Qasim, Ambreen Nasir, Hafiz Rehmat Ullah, Hafiz Atteq-ur-Rehman, Raza Gilani, Shehzad Khan, Burhan Ahmed, Afzaan Muneer, Mudassar Semab, Fahad Anjum, Ismail Sherwani, Ayesha Arooj, Adnan Farooq, Abdullah Mohsin, Hasan Haider Rizvi, Amna Kaleem, Misbah Mukhtar, Syeda Qurat-ul-Ain and Nawazish Malik.
He said that this academic year the Ravian orators established their convincing supremacy over their peers from other institutions at some of the most prestigious contests hosted by the institutions, including PAF Academy Raisalpur, Higher Education Commission, Aitchison College, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, FC College, King Edward Medical University and Allama Iqbal Medical College.
