Boards Agree to Conduct Inter Exams in April
Lahore, May 29: The Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen (PBCC) has unanimously agreed to shift intermediate annual examinations from May to first week of April — to save students from unbearable hot weather — from next year. Responding to students’ problems resulting from extremely hot weather coupled with power outages, the PBCC has taken a sympathetic look and decided that all nine education boards in Punjab should begin intermediate annual examinations in the first week of April from next year when the weather is not too harsh.
The PBCC meeting chaired by Lahore board chairman Nasrullah Virk on Tuesday has asked the Punjab higher education department to coordinate with universities in the province and convince them to shift their graduation examinations to May from April to make room for intermediate annual examinations.
Sources told Dawn that the new arrangement would systemise matriculation, intermediate and BA/BSc annual examinations. Sources said the PBCC included this item on its agenda at the eleventh hour to find a way out.
The meeting, it is learnt, agreed that it was not possible for boards to provide generators at examination centres for hundreds of thousands of intermediate students. However, the meeting was of the view that the number of graduation candidates and examination centres was much lower compared to intermediate students and examination centres. “Since universities charge higher examination fee, they can provide generators at all examination centres,” sources said.
Sources said the PBCC decision was being forwarded to the Punjab higher education department so that the additional secretary (academics) could coordinate with all universities and notify the decision well in time.Dawn.
