Board exams fail 'test of students': UHS records feedback

Lahore: Expressing reservations about the board examinations, a majority of the candidates who appeared in the medical entrance test 2008-09 described the BISE testing as "unfair and lacking in transparency".

The candidates' response came through a feedback pro forma they were asked to fill (compulsorily) at the time of the entrance test. The University of Health Sciences prepared the feedback document in consultation with foreign experts, and later made an assessment.

More than 18,000 candidates appeared in the entrance test for admission to medical and dental institutions in Punjab last month. While 52 per cent are of the opinion that the board examinations are not transparent and fair, some 35 per cent see no problem with these. The remaining did not respond to the question.

Similarly, eighteen per cent give the impression that the overall conduct of the entrance test was average, 20 per cent call it good, 25 per cent fair and 36 per cent excellent.

Most candidates responded in positive to a query that the model papers provided in the admission kit were helpful, timings (of the test) observed with punctuality, conducting staff was cooperative and general atmosphere of the examination halls was enabling.

The UHS has also conducted another study regarding the admission of the candidates likely to go for the medical and dental colleges in the province for the 2008-09 session.

Interestingly, as many as 631 candidates who are likely to get admission are from the not-so-developed districts of southern Punjab. Of them, 56 candidates belong to Layyah, 116 to Muzaffargarh, 30 to Rajanpur, 120 to Multan, 65 to Bahawalpur, 33 to Bahawalnagar, 59 to Dera Ghazi Khan, 65 to Rahim Yar Khan, 34 to Vehari, 28 to Khanewal, 16 to Lodhran and nine to Bhakkar.

Some 156 candidates belong to Northern Punjab; five to Mirpur, 77 to Rawalpindi, five to Bhimber, 13 to Attock, 26 to Islamabad, five to Kotli, four to Bagh (AJK), four to Poonch, one to Sindhnoti, 12 to AJK and four to Muzaffarabad.

Some 1,213 are from the central Punjab. Of them, 181 belong to Faisalabad, Gujranwala has 122, Kasur (26), Sheikhupura (44), Narowal (28), Jhang (59), Okara (34), Toba Tek Singh (47), Pakpattan (18), Lahore (412), Sargodha (52), Nankana Sahib (10), Sahiwal (31), Gujrat (36), Hafizabad (9), Sialkot (46), Jhelum (nine), Chakwal (16), Mandi Bahauddin (7), Mianwali (8) and Khushab (18).

The study shows that significant high positive correlation has been observed between the FSc and entrance test marks, that is, 71 per cent. It means that the candidates who have scored high marks in FSc also did well in the entrance test.

It also points out that the candidates who had done entrance test preparation through professional academies, which are functioning in major cities of the province, could do exceptionally well as was the case in the past.

A report on the feedback of the candidates will be submitted to the authorities concerned for action. The first consolidated list of the candidates will be displayed by the end of this month. Dawn
