Medical education: 56,272 sit Test in 13 Cities
LAHORE:August 29:As many as 56,272 candidates (36,542 women and 19,730 men) sat the medical and dental colleges’ entrance test on Sunday.

The test was held amid tight security arrangements at 27 centres set up in 13 cities by the University of Health Sciences (UHS). It started at 9am though test takers had started arriving at the centres as early as 6am.

The UHS has deputed around 5,000 officials to perform invigilation and supervision duties.

Police and Rescue 1122 teams were deployed at the centres to deal with any untoward situation. Close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, cell phone signal jammers and walk-through gates were installed at the centres to ensure foolproof security.

Arrangements were also put in place for test takers with physical disabilities and waiting and parking spaces were designated for those accompanying the test takers.

In Lahore, arrangements were monitored by UHS Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (r) Muhammad Aslam and Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Secretary Najam Ahmad Shah, Primary and Secondary Healthcare Secretary Ali Jan Khan, Local Government and Community Development Secretary Aslam Kamboh, Management of Professional Development Secretary Nadeem Irshad Kiyani, Higher Education Secretary Capt (r) Nasim Nawaz, Women Development Secretary Bushra Aman, Punjab Examination Commission CEO Nasir Iqbal Malik, Literacy Secretary Naveed Ahmad Chaudhry, Industries DG Khalid Saleem, Punjab Health Sector Reforms Programme project director Muhammad Khan Ranjha and DCO Muhammad Usman.

The test was administered to 11,155 women and 5,635 men at the Lahore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education examination halls, Lawrence Road; Punjab University examination halls, Wahdat Road; Government Comprehensive Girls High School; Government Central Model School, Lower Mall; Govt Postgraduate College for Women, Samanabad; University of Education, Township; and Lahore College for Women University, Jail Road.

As many as 7,204 candidates sat the test in Rawalpindi; 8,097 in Multan; 5,742 in Faisalabad; 3,188 in Gujranwala; 2,649 in Bahawalpur; 2,246 in Sargodha; 2,911 in Sahiwal, 1,546 in Gujrat; 1,948 in Dera Ghazi Khan; 1,813 in Rahim Yar Khan; 1,728 in Sialkot and 410 in Hasan Abdal.

Speaking on the occasion, UHS Vice Chancellor Muhammad Aslam said thousands of bright students were drawn towards the fields of medicine and dentistry every year. “The UHS has tried to make the process of admission structured and transparent. We review it on regular intervals to ensure that only those suitable for the professions and capable to cope with the workload are offered admissions,” he said. He said the UHS was committed to providing equal opportunity to all applicants to express their suitability for the MBBS and BDS degree programmes.

The vice chancellor said that compared to last year 10,000 more people had sat the test this year.  He said 46,559 students had taken the test last year. “This shows that the fields of medicine and dentistry were gaining popularity among the youth,” he said.

Answer keys were uploaded on the UHS website (www.uhs.edu.pk) at the end of the test to let the test takers calculate their scores on their own. The official result will be announced within 10 days.

Those with an aggregate score of 82 per cent or above in accordance with the formula devised by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council will be eligible to apply for admission on open merit seats. They will be required to choose a college and submit their application forms between October 3 and October 15.

The forms and college prospectus will be available at the UHS head office, Lahore; the Nishter Medical College, Multan and the Rawalpindi Medical College, Rawalpindi. The first admission list will be shared with the public on October 28.
