Government College for Women Gulberg Lahore expels student over 'extreme misconduct'

Lahore: Gulberg Government College for Women (GCW)'s administration expelled a student, Mehreen Anwer, on the basis of extreme misconduct on Wednesday, after the girl's mother and sister had quarrelled with a teacher a few days ago.

The Education Department has instructed Executive District Officer (EDO) Muhammad Saeed to conduct an inquiry and present a report about the issue. GCW Physics Department teacher Kauser Javaid beat the student because she had allegedly brought her cellular phone to the college. The administration said that the Punjab government had imposed a ban on students taking their cellular phones to government institutions. The day after the incident (Tuesday), Mehreen, the next day (Tuesday), Mehreen, with her sister and mother also beat up the teacher. The administration conducted an inquiry into the matter and expelled Mehreen from the institution.

Inquiry: The inquiry was held in the principal's office. Seven faculty members, including the Vice-Principal, attended the inquiry and listened to Kauser's side of the story. However, the administration did not call Mehreen to allow her to defend herself.

Mother: Mehreen said that the teacher was lying, adding that she had never taken her cell phone to college. She alleged that the teacher had beaten her severely in a dark room, adding that she had even fainted because of her injuries. She said that Kauser had also thrashed her mother in front of her sister, adding that they had to defend their mother. She said that Kauser had demanded Rs 1,000 as a bribe from her when she could not find a cellular phone on her. She said that the Education Department should conduct a fair inquiry into the matter, adding that her parents had also registered a first information report (FIR) against the college administration.

We repeatedly contacted GCW Vice-Principal Rakhshanda Siddiq and Kauser. However, neither of them attended their cell phones. The EDO said that today (Thursday) he would visit the college and probe into the matter. College students have also criticised the administration for this. They said that if Mehreen was responsible than the administration should at least allow her to state her side of the incident.

Protest: Mahwish, a student of the college, said that the students would protest against the administration's decision on Thursday, adding that every student claimed that Mehreen was innocent and that Kauser had beaten her and her mother. Daily Times
