PMA opposes govt plan to bifurcate DUHS
Karachi:June 15:The Karachi chapter of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed concerns over reports that the Sindh government was planning to establish a new medical university by bifurcating the Dow International Medical College (DIMC), which is a constituent college of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS).

PMA leader Dr Ahmed Bhimani alleged on Tuesday that the plan was being formulated by some individuals with vested interests in the Sindh government, after they failed to appoint their desired person as the DUHS vice chancellor.

He claimed the meritorious appointment of the current DUHS VC was not acceptable to some individuals in the provincial government. “They want to divide the institution and create a varsity to undermine the authority of the DUHS administration.”

Talking about the DIMC, he said foreign students were paying a hefty amount of US$22,000 per year and the five registered batches had paid over a billion rupees to the college. “The college also receives donations but there is no record of its audit,” Dr Bhimani asserted.

He stated the PMA suspected that those billions would be wasted in creating a new medical university, a move that he said would further complicate the situation for teachers who are already providing their services to both the DUHS and its constituent college, DIMC.

“The PMA demands that the Sindh government refrain from establishing a new medical university. The government should instead focus on improving the quality of education at the existing universities.”
