Guidebook introduced to reduce infections in surgical procedures
KARACHI:July 19: A guidebook aimed to reduce the incidents of infection in surgical procedures was introduced on Tuesday in Karachi.
Martin Dow in collaboration with Dr Salman Faridi launched 'National Consensus Guidelines for Chemoprophylaxis and Surgical Site Infections' handbook at an event.

Thirty-one surgeons across the country provided their input in preparing these guidelines.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Dr Salman Faridi, Medical Director at Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College Karachi said that the primary objective behind developing the guideline was to provide an infection control document which encourages the appropriate use of antibiotics.

"Currently there is a lack of uniformity among surgical practices across the country," Professor Faridi said while adding that inappropriate antibiotic usage also leads to drug resistance which means many infections become difficult to eradicate.

On the occasion, Jawed Akhai, Chairman Martin Dow Group hoped that handbook would provide surgeons guidelines to ensure and enhance patient safety by reducing infections and preventing drug resistance so antibiotics don't lose their efficacy.

"These guidelines will open up new horizons in the fields of medical education and practices in the country," he added.
