LAHORE:18 October:Students from different varsities of the city protested in solidarity with the students of the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad and demanded an end to the rising cost of education in the country.

The protestors showed solidarity with the students of QAU and said students from all over the country demanded an end to the rising fee and cost of education. They raised slogans against the increase and said government policies had closed the doors to education for the underprivileged.

They said that attaining an education was a dream for the have-nots of the country. The students remained of the opinion that middle class families were unable to afford the fee of universities.

The protesters said that on the one hand, education was expensive, while on the other, young graduates were unable to find employment. They said that students gave millions in fee to get degrees, but remained unemployed. The protesters pointed out that administrations of educational institutions, fearing protests from students, had turned campuses into jails in the name of security.

They said that authorities at these institutions had also given a free hand to violent student organisations, while the progressive ones were barred from any activity on campus.

The murder of Mashal Khan was evidence that such elements had a free rein in varsities of the country, they added.

The students said that free education and jobs opportunities of were their basic right. They added that they would continue their struggle against the rising fee and their right to free education.

PYA National Coordinator Zainul Abideen said “Free education is the basic right of every citizen and all students must fight to snatch their right from the jaws of the ruling class.”

They claimed that students of QAU Islamabad were being penalised for protesting against a fee raise. They said the demands of the students of QAU Islamabad should be accepted and they should be given free hostel and bus services.

As many as eight QAU students were expelled and 18 others were rusticated, while 42 were penalised for their role in on-campus clashes between two ethnic student groups in May 2017. On October 4, students blocked the main road leading to QAU, while also causing the suspension of the transport facility. The move had closed down the university and the situation has remained since, thus suspending all activities on campus.Published in The Express Tribune.
