Medical colleges’ fee hike reversed
ISLAMABAD:22 November: The regulatory body of medical education, asserting its authority, ruled that the admission policy introduced last year will stay put and private colleges are bound to charge fee fixed last year and enrol student following a centralised system.

The private medical colleges wanted to charge Rs1.3 million as fee, however, the PMDC had objected and an agreement was about to be reached at Rs800,000, but the council decided that the past fee of Rs640,000 would continue for the next year too.

The 33 member governing council of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) in its meeting on Tuesday despite pressures from private colleges decided that students enrolled by the private colleges violating rules would not be registered with the PMDC.

A tug of war between the regulatory body and the private colleges surfaced when the latter started admissions before the due dates fixed by the PMDC, despite that it had recommended the government to increase admission fee as per private college wishes.

On repeated requests for fee hike of private medical and dental colleges up to Rs1.3 million, the council after several meetings with Pakistan Association of Medical and Dental Institutions (PAMI) sent recommendation to the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination for fee increase to Rs800,000 in private medical and dental colleges.

But the betrayal by the private colleges infuriated the council leading to the reversal of its decision. The council in its previous session showed serious concerns over admitting students in medical and dental colleges prior to the time frame PMDC has imposed on them. It was discussed that majority of private medical and dental colleges have advertised in the newspapers and admitted students before October 31 and before completion of admission process of public medical and dental colleges in violation of rules.

The council after taking notice of violation by the private medical colleges decided to cancel the recommendations of fee hike. Now as per admission policy 2016 the fee of medical dental college shall be Rs642,000 only for the upcoming sessions as charged previously.

The PMDC in a statement has maintained that the council is the supreme regulatory body for the medical and dental education and any advertisement published from any unauthorised group or individual shall be ignored.

All students, their parents and institutions are advised to strictly follow the centralised provincial and regional admission and entry test policy described in Admission Regulations 2016 – vide S.R.O.1003 (1) 2016 dated October 27, 2016 (admissions, house job and internship regulations 2016) available on PMDC website www.pmdc.org.pk – and all the other decisions done by the PMDC.
