Family appeals for recovery of Baloch student picked up from KU
Karachi:November 23:Trying hard but miserably failing at holding back her tears, Hameeda Baloch pleaded to the Supreme Court and human rights organisations to do the needful for the recovery of her missing brother.
The family maintains that the 21-year-old student was picked up from the University of Karachi on November 20 and they have no information on his whereabouts since then.
As per eyewitness accounts, Sagheer Ahmed Baloch, a student at KU’s Department of Political Science, was picked up by men in plainclothes from the varsity’s Visual Studies canteen and whisked away in a White Corolla at around 5pm this past Monday.
Addressing a presser held outside the Karachi Press Club, Hameeda claimed her brother had no affiliation with any separatist Baloch group or organisation. “His only crime is that he belongs to Awaran – one of the more restive districts in Balochistan influenced by insurgency,” said the visibly disturbed sister.
“It has been over 48 hours since Sagheer was taken away and nobody has contacted us so far. We still do not know why he was picked up and he has also not been produced in any court of law,” Hameeda added.
The only reason Sagheer was studying in Karachi was because of a lack of educational institutions in Balochistan, she explained, adding, “The joy that we felt when Sagheer secured an admission at one of Pakistan’s most prestigious universities now seems long gone.”
She said her brother had been picked up over some misinformation and appealed for his immediate release. Hameeda concluded by saying that apprehending anyone without informing a court of law or the person’s family was a gross violation of Pakistan’s constitution and such acts should be strictly dealt with. The news.
