Parents express reservations about security of SBBWU hostel
PESHAWAR:March 7: The parents of students enrolled at the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University (SBBWU) have expressed reservations over the security of the newly acquired hostel in Chagharmatti village.

Noor Khan, whose daughter has got admission at the SBBWU in M.Phil, said he was worried about the accommodation of his daughter.

He criticised the university management for arranging accommodation for students at a college in Chagharmatti village.

He alleged that his daughter was asked to arrange her own accommodation as her classes continue late into the evening and the university could not provide transport at that time.

Another parent, who wished not to be named, said he was worried for the security of his daughter.

He said the presence of the police armoured vehicle and cops attract the attention of criminal elements. The concerned parent said the area was dangerous and the girl students were spending sleepless nights.

He said his family has decided to cancel admission of his daughter as her security was their first priority.

Talking to The News, an official of the university administration on the condition of anonymity told The News that they were faced with shortage of space.

The official said the SBBWU administration was being pressured by the Frontier College to vacate the university’s City Campus. He added that the SBBWU has no building to relocate the students there from the City Campus.

The SBBWU, whose main campus is located at Larama village on the outskirts of Peshawar, has been able to get extension from time to time but now the university administration has received directives from Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to vacate the City Campus.

The undergraduate students have been accommodated at the SBBWU campus while the masters and other senior students were shifted to the newly established hostel at the building of the Government College for Girls in Chagharmatti.

The official said the SBBWU didn’t have enough infrastructures to handle the current situation after vacating the City Campus.

He said it would have been better if the SBBWU had been allowed to use the City Campus till proper arrangements for the university had been made.

Registrar SBBWU Zuhra Shehzad told The News that the university was vacating Frontier College till April 15 as per the directives of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor.

She said the SBBWU had acquired the building of the Government College for Girls in Chagharmatti for use as hostel for the students.

She said that complete arrangements had been made at the hostel, including kitchen and proper security. She added that the university had also provided transportation facility to the students.

She said the college in Chagharmatti was not in use since its establishment and this was the reason the SBBWU demanded it for use as hostel till construction of its own hostels.

She said the SBBWU would use the college building for two years.

When asked that some students and parents have complaints about the insecurity at the college building being used as hostel, she replied: “I have no solution for it. They have complaints over living in Pakistan, for which we have no solution.”

However, she claimed that the university had been regularly inviting the concerned parents to brief them about the arrangements, including security, at the hostel. The news.
