Schools in Karachi continue charging extra fee

Karachi: Despite an announcement by the Department of Education ordering private schools to not charge fees for the non-tuition periods of June and July, schools have openly been extorting fees from parents.

According to complaints received, even though the current session for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) would end in April 2009, private schools have, however, issued fee challans for January and June, while the fee for July was expected to be demanded along with the fee for February.

Aggrieved parents who asked for anonymity owing to fear of backlash from the schools, said that they were facing difficulty in paying two months' fees at once.

They said that upon receiving the challan, they approached the school administration and reminded them of the directives of the Education Department, but they were told that this was the school policy.

In one such case, a school has demanded an additional Rs1,500 lab fee per month in addition to the tuition fee amounting to nearly Rs8,000 per month, for January (when the school would be in session) and for June (when the school would not be in session).
