Funding cuts threaten universities of  Nwfp survival

PESHAWAR: Vice chancellors of public sectors universities of NWFPP has planned to approach the government to resolve the issue of cuts in the higher education budget by the federal government and to place the issue before the Governor NWFP Owais Ahmad Ghani, Chancellor of NWFP universities. This was decided in a meeting of the vice chancellors of public sector universities of NWFP held here on Satuday with Vice Chancellor NWFP UET Engr. Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani, in chair. Vice Chancellor Imtiaz Gillani said that universities have been interacting with HEC but the situation in becoming untenable for higher education institutions and universities in the province, adding that in the backdrop of recent slash in higher education budget, there is a shortfall or more than one billion rupees in the recruitment budget and more than two bn rupees in the development budget. This shortfall of funds, he added has occurred in the already approved federal government budget for the session 2007-08.
