FJWU students educated on bird flu

Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), Rawalpindi, in collaboration with the Livestock and Dairy Development Ministry, on Monday organised a seminar on its premises to sensitise students to preventive measures against avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. Addressing the seminar, National Programme for Control of Avian Influenza Project Director Prof Dr Muhammad Akram Muneer said bird flu was a viral poultry disease. He said the disease had so far spread in a number of countries. He said bird flue was a lethal virus having potential of re-assortment and emergence of a new influenza virus. It's not a stable virus but it can be avoided by adopting preventive measures, Dr Muneer said, adding, A-type bird flu could inflict a severe illness equally on people of all ages and birds.

He also educated the audience how to avoid the disease. He said awareness of the disease should be increased. He emphasised the importance of hygiene conditions and better cleaning habits in daily life. Dr Muneer advised the students not to touch sick or dead chicken, ducks, pigeons and other birds. He said an individual's contact with birds' feathers and feces without wearing gloves and masks could be injurious. He asked the students to eat well-cooked poultry products and wash hands with soap after having contact with any live or dead poultry or raw poultry products. A good number of students were present in the seminar. In the end, FJWU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Saeeda Asadullah Khan presented the university souvenir to the speaker. Daily Times
