Teachers approach  Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Pehhwar for exam duties

PESHAWAR: Teachers have started approaching the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Peshawar authorities to attain duties for the upcoming matriculation examination scheduled from March 17.

A great rush of teachers was witnessed on the BISE premises. They were busy in getting the duties of superintendent, deputy superintendent or invigilator in the coming higher secondary school certificate examination.

There were two obvious reasons for the teachers to struggle for getting exam duties. The foremost reason that the teachers were open to state was the financial constraints. Asked about using different means for getting duty, a number of teachers told this correspondent that this would provide them an opportunity to earn some surplus income in term of honoraria for their duties.

A teacher said on the condition of anonymity that their salaries were too low and it was difficult for them to make both ends meets in the current inflation. The exam duty gives them a little relief, he opined.

There is, however, a general perception that most of the teachers who use influence to get duty want to favour their dear ones appearing in the exam. While some are there who use unfair means in the exam to earn more and more money.

They take bribes from students appearing in the exam to do them favours, said another high schoolteacher, who said he had no interest in taking on the exam duty. It is the duty of the board authorities to have a check on the examiners and assign exam duties to honest people, he opined.

A senior board official informed that a teacher performing exam duty is given Rs300 honoraria per day. He said the total number of examination centres under BISEP was 357 and they had to appoint a superintendent, one deputy superintendent and three invigilators for each centre.

He said a total of 102,733 students would appear in grade 9 exams this year and 37,823 would take class 10 examination. He rejected the allegations that the board assigns duties on political basis or approach, saying the teachers were named for duties after due consultation with their respective principals and executive district officers (education).
