The responsibilities of fulfilling the ideals and the aspirations of a nation generally lie with the educational institutions of a country. It is a fact now that both students as well as the teachers of this college have played their roles quite successfully so far in this respect. That is why Government National College, Karachi, is one of the well-known colleges of the city. Moreover, it is the biggest college of Karachi being run under one roof with all the three faculties of Science, Arts and Commerce up to degree level being affiliated with the University of Karachi.

Government National College is undergoing rapid evolution. To its Science Faculty, Department of Computer Science was added in 1996 when Computer Science was offered at intermediate level for the first time in any government college of Karachi. Computer Science at B.Sc. level was introduced in 1998. It is one of the top class computer science faculty institutions in Pakistan.

Government of Sindh, with this concept that education of Information Technology should come within the reach of common people also, introduced a three-year B.C.S. (Bachelor in Computer Science) program in ten public sector colleges of the province in 2001. Govt. National College, Karachi, had the honor of being the first selectee for this program. Government of Sindh and the college administration took the project on war-footings and now BCS block is a beautiful reality in itself with fully equipped laboratories, well furnished classrooms and an independent library containing several hundred books of various disciplines. Historically speaking, the college excels in its academic, curricular and extra-curricular activities.
