KU teacher asked return scholarship money

Karachi:The Karachi University authorities have asked a teacher of the varsity to return the money awarded to her through a scholarship because she has failed to attain the Masters degree from the foreign university.

The scholarship was awarded under the Professional Development Programme by the Civil Service Reforms Unit (CSRU) in the Establishment Division during 2004-05.

Samina Qureshi of the Department of Mass Communications was granted an amount of over Rs1,936,313 in foreign currency to do her Masters from Holland but she returned to Pakistan without attaining the degree.

The authorities, after considerable time, asked her in a letter to either show the degree or return the money to the CSRU on or before February 5, 2010. When Qureshi did not respond to the letter, the general manager CSRU wrote a letter to Dean of Arts Prof Saleem Memon, requesting him to initiate disciplinary action against the teacher to recover the training cost.

The News approached Qureshi for her version but she did not receive the call. However, her husband, who works for a television channel, called the reporter, saying that the story should not be published.

Ms Qureshi is Treasurer of the Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) and The News called the president of the KUTS to know their viewpoint on the issue. Dr Abid Hasnain said that there were instances when teachers from the KU went abroad but could not complete their research. According to him, Ms Qureshi has completed 16 months of course work but was unable to submit her research report. She intends to submit it at the end of March, he added.

It is learnt from a reliable source that Ms Qureshi has submitted a letter, supposedly written by her research supervisor in Holland, to the KU officials, requesting the university not to initiate any disciplinary action against her, because the research supervisor was unable to check her thesis. The news
