NWFP University of Engineering and Technology closed till June 8 following protests

Peshawar: Following series of protests by students against prolonged loadshedding and police torture, administration of the NWFP University of Engineering and Technology Wednesday closed down the varsity till June 8.

A UET registrar's notification says that the university will remain closed till Jun 8 due to the uncertain situation. The students of the university under the aegis of Muttahida Talaba Mahaz gathered outside the office of the vice chancellor to condemn what they called the inhuman torture by the campus police on their colleagues who were protesting against the persistent power outages and university's inability to provide power generators.

They said the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) led UET students took to streets on Tuesday night to urge the university administration to provide them power generators. "We were peacefully marching towards the coffee shop, when a police party started beating us cruelly. The police also picked up 36 students who were tortured in the lockup," said Muhammad Fakher, Nazim IJT, UET.

He said four of the detained students sustained serious injuries, while one fell unconscious. On Wednesday, the students boycotted classes, gathered in the main lawn and raised slogans against Vice Chancellor Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani. They were also holding placards with slogans against the campus police and university administration.

Meanwhile, with the mediation of some senior teachers between the protesting students and the administration, the varsity administration agreed that no FIR would be lodged against the protesting student and action would be taken against the police constables namely Ihsan and Akram, who had tortured the students while generators would also be provided to the hostels.

After several hours of protest they dispersed peacefully. However, afterwards the university administration closed down the institution for 17 long days. The students, however, opined that the closure of the university was not acceptable and they would start a protest drive against it.

The first protest demonstration to this effect would be held today (Thursday) outside the Peshawar Press Club, Fakher said. It may be mentioned that the frequent loadshedding in the educational institutions on the premises of the University Campus Peshawar has been badly affecting the students particularly those appearing in the ongoing FA/FSc examination and those preparing for their professional colleges examinations such as the Khyber Medical College, and others.

The administration of University of Peshawar had closed down its constituent institutions for five days, when a major fault developed in the electricity system in Peshawar as a result of blowing up of a 500kv tower at Sheikh Mohammadi grid station.

After the university was reopened, the administration arranged power generators for the boarding students to save their time from being wasted. This provoked the students of Islamia College Peshawar, Khyber Medical College Peshawar and UET to stress their respective administration to arrange power generators.
