The Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) organised an awareness seminar on bird flu in collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock and Dairy Development here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram Muneer, project director of the National Programme for Control of Avian Influenza, said Bird Flu is a viral poultry disease. The number of countries affected by this syndrome is increasing day-by-day.

He said that bird flu is caused by a virus which occurs naturally among birds. The lethal type A virus, with a potential of re-assortment, and emergence of new influenza viruses, could infect humans and birds, causing severe illness. It is not a stable virus and it can be avoided by adopting preventive measures.

Dr. Muhammad Akram Muneer also briefed the audience on how to avoid the disease. The expert said that awareness regarding avian influenza should be increased. He stressed on the importance of hygiene and better cleaning habits in daily life. He advised students to adopt different preventive measures such as avoiding handling sick or dead chickens, ducks, pigeons and other birds, including their feathers and faeces, without gloves and masks; eating well-cooked poultry, poultry products and eggs; carefully separate the storage and preparation of raw poultry meat and uncooked eggs from that of other foods; wash hands with soap and water after any contact with live or dead poultry or raw poultry products. At the conclusion of the seminar, FJWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Saeeda Asadullah Khan presented the university souvenir to the guest speaker as a token of appreciation.
