US delegation meets University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore vice-chancellor

LAHORE (APP): A US delegation comprising Rich Magiani and Aizaz Asif visited the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore and called on Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz here Saturday. They discussed matters of mutual interest and possible areas of cooperation for development of the livestock sector, said 'varsity sources. The VC briefed the delegation on the role of UVAS in producing manpower, conducting training and research programs, extension services and diagnosis and prevention of animal diseases. He said the university had launched new degree programs according to market needs, and pointed out that the MBA in Life Sciences is a unique degree program being offered only in UVAS. The VC said that the research output of the UVAS faculty has increased manifold and the number of research papers published in impact-factor journals has risen to 49 this year, compared to only three papers in the year 2006. UVAS has also achieved the expertise of producing vaccines against various animal diseases like foot and mouth disease and avain influenza. Prof Nawaz said that the university has started enrolling livestock farmers residing in villages around the Ravi Campus at Pattoki, who will be trained in the proper management of animals. Low yield of animals, deficient feed resources, diseases, poor livestock management and lack of human resource were the main constraints in the development of the livestock sector, he said adding that UVAS has taken various steps to tackle these problems.
