Institute of Education & Research

The Institute of Education and Research was established in 1974 as Department of Education. It was given the status of Institute in 1976. At the time of its Inception, the following objectives were set forth for the Institute:

To provide and promote facilities for training, study and research in education keeping in view the needs and resources available.

To provide teaching, training and guidance in order to prepare candidates for the B.Ed and M.Ed degrees and such other diplomas and degrees that may be instituted as and when necessary.

To help develop in the trainees basic understandings, attitudes, abilities and skills essential to successful teaching and creative educational leadership.

To provide opportunities for professional educators for improving their knowledge and ability through special in-service education programs.

To conduct research in the field of Education and publish the results of such research for the information of those who are concerned with education.

To provide guidance and advisory services to educational institutions as and when necessary.

The Institute at present provides facilities to train candidates for the B.Ed and M.Ed degrees. The M.Ed program was initiated to provide facilities for advanced degree in teacher education. The program was instituted from the academic session 1975-76. This program enables trained teachers, educational administrators, researchers and others who already possess B.Ed degree or its equivalent to undergo further professional training and qualify for M.Ed degree. The program of studies and training extends over one academic year. The B.Ed program was initiated to prepare trained teachers for middle and high schools of the province. Since 1976-77, the national B.Ed curriculum duly approved by University Grants Commission was being followed. Recently all the courses for B.Ed & M.Ed have been revised and different specializations have been started in M.Ed Program. The Institute from this academic session is starting its M.Phil and Ph.D (Education) classes.
