Biological Sciences

Owing to the economic advantages during the recent decades, biological sciences have been transformed into recombinant DNA technology, enriching our understanding of genes and proteins.

Genetics, Molecular biology, biochemistry and microbiology have come together to reveal the molecular mechanisms of fundamental biological processes. Biotechnology, an emergent discipline, grew out of advances in biological sciences: in an old field but its potential have been enhanced by gene cloning/genetic engineering.

The requirements of properly trained manpower in these areas in which our country has remained deficient for a long period will continue to grow in future.

Keeping in view the current state of knowledge in the above fields, department of Biological Sciences will undertake teaching/research and aim at producing graduates by setting a strong base of biological sciences such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbiology and Immunology etc, little away from traditional fields such as Botany and Zoology.

The Department of Biological Sciences is in the initial stage of its development, and at present a two year course in M.Sc Biology is offered.

Introduction of other degree programs such as Microbiology, Immunology, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology are on the anvil, with research at M.Phil/Ph.D levels.
