Punjab Public Service Commission is symbol of supremacy of merit: governor

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer on Tuesday appreciated the services of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) terming it a ‘symbol of supremacy of merit’ in society. He was addressing a meeting with PPSC officials to review the commission’s performance at the Governor’s House. PPSC Acting Chairman Shahzad Hassan Pervez presented an analytical report to the governor. The report mentioned that 215,000 people applied for 6,774 vacant posts in various public departments in 2008. The governor was told that 81,187 applications were still pending due to a delay in the recruitment process of 3,257 public posts during 2008. It said authorities interviewed 2,457 people who were found suitable for the posts despite the fact that 800 seats were still vacant, as no appropriate candidate applied for them. The governor said the commission must remain impartial, as it provided the country’s youth with an equal opportunity to progress in practical life. He also reviewed suggestions regarding the commission’s financial independence and to upgrade the system of examinations. The governor appreciated that 90 percent of the youth who joined public service were students of public schools who belonged to lower or middle class families. staff report
