SMIU to set up vocational training centre for underprivileged communities in Malir
Sindh:February 8:The Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) will set up an institute for educational and vocational training for underprivileged people of nearby villages at the proposed site for its Malir campus, said vice chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh on Wednesday.

He was speaking as the guest of honour at a seminar on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility Policy and National Socio-Economic Agenda’. The programme was organised by the National Forum for Environment and Health. The VC informed the audience that the institute would be established by April this year at the proposed site for the varsity’s Malir campus at the Education City project off M-9 Section of Motorway, between Karachi and Hyderabad.

He said the proposed institute having special focus on vocational training of impoverished women of the area would be established much before the varsity’s Malir campus would start functioning at the Education City.

Dr Shaikh lamented the situation that several leading private and public educational institutions had land reserved in the Education City project to establish campuses, but they never thought to come up with any plan for the socio-economic uplift and advancement of underprivileged local communities living in nearby villages.

He said the SMIU being a socially responsible university would set a good precedent for all such academic institutions, which were aiming to launch their ventures at the proposed site of the Education City.

Former federal minister Javed Jabbar said the corporate entities should discharge their social obligations in the most cautious manner to ensure sustainable development of underprivileged sections of society.

He said people living below the poverty line, out-of-school children, highly inadequate number of taxpaying citizens, and less prevalence of family planning techniques were some of the alarming socio-economic issues that should be resolved on an urgent basis. The news.
