Bahauddin Zakariya University Students hit out at academic

Multan: Hundreds of computer science students of the Bahauddin Zakariya University on Thursday staged a day-long sit-in at Bank Chowk, on varsity campus demanding the removal of department's chairman.

The students protesting against, what they called, misbehaviour of Chairman Dr Amanullah, also sealed the entire BZU campus after boycotting the classes.

Because of the protest, hundreds of students got stranded on the campus as transport system got suspended.

Earlier, the students had staged a protest on the issue on Wednesday. The students staged the sit-in from 11am to 5pm.

The protesters alleged the chairman was in the habit of punishing students for wrong reasons and teased them on various pretexts. They also complained that the department was charging higher fees as compared to others, while it was lacking in facilities.

They also alleged that a lecturer, Madam Humaira, was threatening the female students by visiting their hostel and asking them to keep away from the protest while the male teachers were also resorting to such tactics.

"We had ended our (Wednesday) protest on the assurance of BZU administration that our demands will be presented in the forthcoming meeting of syndicate to be held on Monday," they said and added that the protest would continue till the removal of the chairman. They announced to hold a protest rally on Monday and a press conference on Friday (today).

A five-member committee comprising Dr Muhammad Ali, Dr Khawaja Alqama, Dr GR Pasha, Dr Ejaz and Dr Shubber negotiated with the protesting students on the behalf of vice chancellor and assured them that their demands would be tabled in syndicate meeting.

Meanwhile, about a dozen BZU commerce department students staged a demonstration outside the local press club against the varsity administration for issuing them flawed result cards.

Carrying placards, the protesters shouted slogans against the administration and warned they would move high court if they were not issued corrected result cards within two days.

They said they took admission in a four-year degree programme, BS (Hons), Accounting and Finance, in 2004, but after successful completion of the course they were given the result cards of BSc Accounting and Finance.

They said it was tantamount to ruining their future as despite having qualified for the degree since August 2008, they were not eligible to apply for any job as they had been issued result card of a two-year course instead of a four-year master's degree.

They said despite submitted applications to commerce department Chairman Dr Mujahid on October 16, 2008, and to the BZU VC on October 21, nothing had been done to address their grievance.

Sources said initially the varsity issued BS (Hons) transcripts to the students without mentioning 'Accounting and Finance' on it, and when the students protested, another result card of BSc Accounting and Finance was issued to some of the students. Dawn
