A week of weakening QAU administration

Islamabad: The litigious and quarrelsome villagers encroaching on the land of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) are not allowing the varsity administration to fence the property with barbed wire exposing the faculty and the students to muggers and thieves.

The students of hostel number 8 located far from the university are more prone to attacks in the evening by intruders who, the varsity and the district administration believe, are no other than the villagers. Mobile and purse snatching is common on the campus.

The officials have said, "The administration wanted demarcation of the entire campus, not only hostel no 8, but the encroachers did not allow it to do so on the excuse that it would hurt privacy of their houses."

"The university has been held hostage to the encroachers," said an official.

Students, they said, had lodged with the administration complaints to the effect time and again but the administration simply could not do any thing in this regard.

Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, a local MNA, is of the view that the encroachers have been living in the area for over 50 years and it was unfair to displace them after formation of the university.

QAU Vice Chancellor M Qasim Jan said the university administration did not want to get involved in any dispute with the encroachers, which was why it had preferred fixing the barbed wire away from their houses. He said there was a security issue because of a constant presence of the encroachers on the campus.

A female professor was attacked in May 2007 by an outsider. Since then the administration has been trying to build a boundary wall of the campus but failed.
