The Doctor of Physiotherapy



Program
 
Physiotherapy is an essential segment of modern health care delivery system. It is a science and art of healing which pertain to the assessment of musculoskeletal, Neurological, Cardio-Vascular and Respiratory systems, Peritoneal pleural other cavities and Organs, disorders of functions including pain, Edema, other physiological, structural and those of Psychosomatic in origin. It also deals with treatment by natural sources based on movement, manual therapy, physical agents, patient management techniques and the use of appliance, facilitator gadgets to relieve the pain and other complications. Thus, Physiotherapy covers basic parameters of healing science i.e. preventive, promotive, diagnostic, rehabilitative, and curative. 
 
Note:
 
DPT program is semester system program in which each semester consist of 18 weeks including teaching period (16 weeks) and examination period (2 weeks).
 
Credit Hour:
 
 One credit hour means teaching a theory course for 50-60 minutes each week through out the semester   
   
 One credit hour in laboratory or experimental work would require lab contact for 2 -3 hours

Doctor of physiotherapy program is affiliated with “The University of Faisalabad” and approved by higher education commission of Pakistan.
 
Duration
 
5 years (10 semesters)
 
Overall Aim of the Program
 
Core aim of the program is to:
 
 Produce Graduate physiotherapists with advanced knowledge and skills in different areas of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
 
 Improve the quality of physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices and services in Pakistan. 
 
 Promote the utilization of applied research to develop local capacity for planning and policy development.
 
 Develop state of art physiotherapy management and rehabilitation. Protocols.
 
 Develop national, regional and international cooperation and collaboration among institution, groups and individuals known to be 
  actively in developing and practicing physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
 
 
Objectives of the Program
 
On successfully completing the course, the graduates will be able to: 
 
 Explain the theoretical and practical basis of physiotherapy 
 
 Work autonomously and flexibly in the academic and clinical arenas 
 
 Apply problem-solving skills to theory and practice 
 
 Examine a patient, assess the findings and plan an appropriate physiotherapeutic treatment program using clinical reasoning 
 skills; apply physiotherapeutic techniques appropriately, competently and safel
 
 Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment programs in an ongoing manner and revise and modify them as necessary 
 
 Recognize the limits of physiotherapeutic practice 
 
 Communicate and co-operate effectively with patients and health care professionals, both orally and in writing 
 
 Evaluate research literature critically; devise and carry out a research project 
 
 Use research literature appropriately in their thinking and practice;
 
 Promote physiotherapy and educate others concerning the role of the physiotherapist
 
 Contribute in the future development of the Physiotherapy profession in Pakistan 
 
 
What does Physiotherapist Do?
 
 Evaluate the function of the musculoskeletal, nervous, respiratory and circulatory systems. 
 
 Measure joint range and muscle strength. 
 
 Test for loss of sensation.
 
 Evaluate the nature of pain.
 
 Analyze pattern of posture and movement.
 
 Perform tests of lung capacity.
 
 Electrical tests of nerves and muscles. 
 
 Assess the psycho-social situation of clients.
 
 Educate communities in a healthy lifestyle.

Course Description
 
Format of study for Doctor of Physiotherapy (five year) program 
 
Total no credit hours  173 
 
Total no of Semester  10
 
No of Summer Session  1-2 in one calendar year 
 
Max course load per semester 20 credit hours 
 
Total no of courses  35
 
 
Test and Examination
 
 Mid semester examination shall be held during the 9th week of the semester which shall carry 30% of the total marks allocated 
 for the course 
 
 Quizzes ,special task, home assignment shall carry 20% of the total marks allocated for the course which shall be split over the 
 whole semester 
 
 Final examination shall be held at the end of semester which carry 50% of the total marks allocated for the course 
 
 
Marks Distribution
 
 Generally a course of four credit hour will carry 100 marks
 
 Similarly a course of two credit hour will carry 50 marks 
 
 Above mention criteria is not mandatory to follow as the instructor can evaluate the student at any desired marks designs

Detail Contents:
 
The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is a FIVE years degree program. It comprises five professional years. 
 
 First Professional
 
 Second Professional
 
 Third Professional
 Fourth Professional 
 
 Final professional 
 
 
Curriculum is divided into approximate hours to cover during five years of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Each year is sub-divided into two semesters 16-18 weeks inclusive of exams. There are terminal examinations at the end of each semester.
 
 One year Clinical Clerkship is Mandatory for every graduate.
 
 Medium of instructions is English. 
 
 
Eligibility
 
A person holding FSc (Pre-medical) with minimum 50% marks from Pakistan or an equivalent qualification is eligible for admission. 
 
 
Age Limit: 
 
16-25 Years 
 
Entry Test: 
 
All candidates will have to appear in the entry test. This test will be of objective type having 100 marks from the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Pakistan Studies and Islamic Studies at Intermediate level 
 
Interview 
 
The students will also be interviewed for personality and aptitude for the medical education. 
 
Merit:
 
The merit for admission will be based on the weight age; 10 percent marks obtained in Matric, 40% of marks in FSc 40% of the achievement in entry and 10% for interview.>
 
Medium of Instruction is English. 
 
Duration of the degree Program is 5 years (10 Semesters). The detailed scheme of studies is given.

BS Nursing program




The University's existing facilites for imparting medical education in MBBS, Pharm-D and Diploma in Nursing have been well recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental council (PM & DC), Pakistan Pharmacy Council and Pakistan Nursing Council. Recently the PM & DC has granted its approval for BDS classes. HEC has also issued NOC to start a 4 years program in Doctor of Physiotherapy. The existing infrastructure greatly supports the introduction of BS Nursing Program of 4 years from Fall 2009 
Duration: 8 Semesters (4 Years)
Eligibility: FSc (Pre-Medical) with at least 50% marks or its equivalent. 
Age Limit: 17-24 years.
Interview: It will be conducted by the University in order to finalize the merit, giving weightage to marks obtained in the Matriculation and Intermediate examinations in addition to marks secured in aptitude test as well as in interview. 
Medium of Instruction: English 
Lecture Attendance Requirements: 85% for appearing in the final examination of each semester.
