Re-advertise King Edward Medical College VC post, health dept directed

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has directed the Health department to re-advertise post of King Edward Medical College Vice Chancellor, it was learnt.

He asked the health officials to broaden the scope of competition and remove the condition set by the Punjab government that only candidates who have served the Punjab government are eligible to apply for the post of Vice Chancellor. The CM said that the post should be advertised internationally so that the candidates serving in other provinces of the country and abroad could also participate in the competition.

An insider told this scribe that the CM issued these directions while presiding over a high level meeting of the search committee, constituted the by the government of Punjab to choose the new KEMU Vice Chancellor.

The search committee has been authorised to scrutinise the doctors on the basis of seniority, publications, experience, leadership quality, representation power and visionary ability.

The committee was headed by Syed Babar Ali and represented by it members including the additional chief secretary, secretary Health, secretary Education, Prof Dr Khawaja Sadiq, former principal King Edward Medical College and Prof Dr Fateh Khan, former chairman Board of Management KEMU.

In the meeting, the insider said, the Search Committee Chairman and some other members objected to the criteria of inviting applications only from Punjab-based doctors.

The committee asked the Punjab Chief Minister that the said criteria advertised in the newspaper would not help them in picking a suitable candidate for the post of Vice Chancellor.

While opposing these terms and conditions, the committee members said there are a large number of highly qualified and experienced medical professionals who are working abroad and wanted to serve in their homeland. The committee also requested the CM to direct the Punjab Health department to include the applications of those candidates who had applied three years ago for the said post.

Secretary Health Punjab Anwar A Khan said that the meeting president over by the Punjab CM had decided to change the criteria for the post of VC, KEMU in order to include the applications of foreigners.

He said the Punjab Health department would implement upon the directions of the CM after consulting with the law department soon.

To a query, Anwar A Khan said the Punjab Health department had no record of the applicants who had applied for this post three years ago. The Nation
