Gomal University to provide English language education to FATA students

Dera Ismail Khan: A principal officer of the United States Consulate in Peshawar Lynne Tracy and Gomal University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Farid Khan signed an agreement on Friday to provide English language education to 100 students from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) currently enrolled at the university.

Tracy said that education was at the heart of economic development efforts for FATA. "In Pakistan, strong English skills are essential for earning a university degree, and we know that many students coming from FATA have not had an opportunity to master the English language before they enrolled for a university degree programme. This is why the US government has partnered with Gomal University to develop supplementary English classes for 100 students from FATA."

Nearly $100,000 has been made available in 2008 by the US government to fund English language training at the Gomal University. The supplementary courses will be offered over the course of two years to students from FATA who demonstrate a need for supplementary language training and a commitment to academic excellence. A similar programme has also been launched in partnership with the Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST).

"It is our hope that this programme will provide prepare students for better jobs and greater academic opportunities in the future," said Tracy. "This is one example of how the US Mission is taking action on President Bush's commitment to support the Government of Pakistan's efforts to bring peace and prosperity to FATA." Daily Times
