Demand for Nephrology Dept at King Edward Medical University Lahore.

LAHORE:THE Young Doctors Association (YDA) urged Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to issue the orders for immediate establishment of Nephrology Department at the King Edward Medical University Lahore.

YDA President Dr Rana Sohail and General Secretary Dr Salman Kazmi, in a statement, regretted that the Nephrology Department was not yet established in the 150 years old historical institution. They also expressed concern that there was only one Nephrologist in a biggest public sector medical institution of Pakistan. They said that the posts of Professors and Associate Professors of Nephrology were lying vacant in KEMU, saying that the appointments were also made against these posts but the selected candidates never joined because of the absence of a Nephrology Department in the institution. The Nephrology Ward can be established at available space in Psychiatry Ward. They alleged that KEMUs Vice Chancellor had not been paying heed towards this grave issue.

They further said that the absence of Nephrology Department had been badly affecting the training of young doctors and treatment of patients.

If young doctors will not be imparted training on kidney diseases then they will not be able to become a good specialist in the field, they said and added that as many as 24 latest dialysis machines were available in Mayo Hospital which were not being properly utilized for the benefit of poor patients in the hospital.
