system which involves a team of health professionals, trained in different skills.

Nurses are considered backbone of modern, high quality health care system all over the world. Standard and quality of health care provided by any health facility is directly proportional to the knowledge and skills of its nursing staff.

Nurses not only play vital role in provision of clinical care in the hospitals but their services are needed as physician assistant to assist doctors in different tasks including surgical operations, infection control etc. Nurses also provide counseling services to bring change in risky behaviours and promote safe behaviours in the community.

Nurses with advanced education in nursing, health care or business administration can become seniour executives in organizations such as hospitals, longterm care facilities, community health centers, home care agencies, nursing colleges and professional associations. In these positions, they are often responsible for large staffs, multimillion dollar budgets, establishing standards for care or advocating public health policy and the role of nursing.

Increasing population and rapid development in Medical Sciences has increased the demand of qualified and skilled nurses all over the world.

The situation in Pakistan is quite serious. This is evident from following statistics.

    * Nurse patient ratio-------------- 1 : 313
    * Nurse doctor ratio -------------- 1 : 06
    * Nurse bed ratio ------------------ 1 : 08

In health department Government of Sindh, there are only 1968 sanctioned posts of nurses out of which only 1703 are filled, where as there are 8253 sanctioned posts of doctors, out of which 7188 are filled.

Unfortunately nursing education in Pakistan has remained ignored since independence of the country (1947). Following institutions are currently offering Basic Nursing Programs in private and public sector.

    * Schools of Nursing ……………..….88
    * Schools of Midwifery ……………....96

The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has established “Institute of Nursing” with the help of Higher Education Commission. It will produce highly qualified and skilled nurses with Diploma, BScN, MScN and PhD degrees, to cater the demands of health care system in Pakistan.
