Karachi University evening programmes: students decry course management
Karachi, Jan 17: Newcomers in the Evening BS Programme (3rd honours) at the Department of Chemistry, Karachi University are facing enormous academic problems, as the chemistry department had started the first semester in January 2009 with the courses of second semester.
According to details, students complained that they were being taught the course of second semester at the start of first semester which was causing great difficulty for them.
Majority of the students had opted this evening programme as a part-time studies because of their other engagements.
It is worth mentioning that there are two semesters in a year and tuition fee is charged per semester, while nearly 6 courses are taught in each semester. The evening programme of the University of Karachi offers Masters and BS Programmes.
The timings of the programme have been scheduled from 3:30pm. The timings of the programme provide an excellent opportunity to individuals, who are doing jobs and intend to improve their academic qualifications in pursuit of advancing their learning and career prospects.
When we contacted the chairman of the department, Prof Dr Muhammad Said Arrain, about the complaint of students, he admitted that the complaint was true. "This was not a big issue to start first semester with the courses of second semester because all courses are independent. As far as the students' trouble is concerned there is no difference between both the semesters, they look similar with the courses of first semester because such students are inducted on low percentages, and therefore they have to study hard to get strong grip on the course," he added.
