UAF Seminar on food Insecurity
Faisal abad : October 24: Fifty eight per cent of the total population is in the grip of food insecurity across the country.
It was stated by speakers at the concluding session of three-day international conference on “Emerged issues in nutrition and food safety” arranged by the National Institute of Food Science and Technology and University of Agriculture Faisalabad, here on Wednesday.
The speakers further stated that around 50 per cent of women and children were facing malnutrition. Dr Aurang Zeb presented recommendations of the conference. The moot suggested setting up a national institute of nutrition to address the issue. The conference also recommended establishing Pak food and nutrition council, ensuring potable water for people, conducting tangible researches, making nutrition education part of syllabus, revise food rules as per pattern of the Punjab Food Rules 2011 and enhanced efforts on the part of all stakeholders.

 

Addressing the participants, UAF VC Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan suggested that concerted multi-sector nutrition efforts were needed to address mother-and-child health and nutrition problems. He said the rate of malnutrition among children under the age of 5-year was 43.7 per cent. Talking about food security, he said Pakistan was blessed with four seasons and had the potential to increase agri production manifold to ensure food security.

 

Dr Ibrahim from Halal Food Research Centre Thailand said Pakistan could earn huge foreign exchange by focusing on Halal food as it had the market across the globe.

 

NIFSAT DG Prof Dr Faqeer Anjum said the country’s population was fast increasing. He urged scientists and all stakeholders to play their role in this regard. He said recommendation of the moot would help address the issue at national level.
