A consultative meeting on Nursing Education at Islamabad hotel.

Islamabad:The present government is fully aware of the importance of nursing sector and is determined to raise its level to bring it at par with international standards.

This was stated by Dr Asim Hussain, President Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) who is also Advisor to Prime Minister on Petroleum and Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB), while addressing a consultative meeting on Nursing Education & Employment here at a local hotel.

Dr Asim emphasised the importance of nursing education as a prerequisite for improving the current status and conditions of this sector and stressed upon the need to phase out the prevalent diploma system by replacing it with a four-year BSc Nursing degree. He also suggested that every medical college should have a school of 200 nurses attached to it.

The meeting was the second of a series of consultative meetings, organised by NRB in collaboration with PNC with an objective to devise need-based Nursing Human Resource (NHR), generation of job opportunities at the national and international level, opening of new specialties in this field and funding a way forward for the development of the backbone of medical profession i.e. nurses.

During the meeting, presentations were made by the visiting representatives from Punjab, NWFP and AJK, giving a historical overview of the profession as well as the present scenario of nurses employment.

The presentations were followed by a brain storming session, based on which more presentations were made, indicating problems and also proposing a preferential course of action for their effective resolution.
