Patients fumble for shirking senior doctors at Pakistan Institute  Medical Sciences
ISLAMABAD: Citizens have demanded that the management of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) provide adequate services to patients at its Out Patient Department (OPD) and Emergency Ward.

They complained that most of the time the patients are attended by junior doctors at OPD and Emergency Ward while senior doctors remain absent from duties.

“Senior doctors come to the hospital to show their presence for few minutes,” said Zahoor Khan, an attendant of a patient at PIMS.

He said junior doctors lack experience to give proper medical advice to the patients due to which they have no choice but to prefer private hospitals.

Similarly, the patients who come from far-flung areas having traveled five to six hours for treatment at PIMS, have to face several problems. They are given next dates for check-up or operation or even sometimes doctors on duty refuse to treat them deliberately without any reason, it is complained.

Faseh Ahmad, attendant of another patient, who was admitted to Medical Ward-III, alleged, “No senior doctor is here to check my brother while junior doctors remain busy in gossiping with one another all the time.”

He suggested that there should be frequent surprise visits of the high-ups of Health Ministry to monitor the situation and check attitude of the doctors with the patients.

When contacted an official of the hospital said that five to six community medical officers remain on duty in each emergency ward where 80 percent patients visit with minor diseases like cough or headache while only 20 percent patients are admitted with serious conditions including head injury, heart attack etc.

He said a seven- to-eight-member team of doctors perform duties at OPD, including medical officer, professor, assistant professor and post-graduates while in Filter Clinics each section has a two-to-three-member team of doctors.

He said one doctor examines five to seven patients a day in foreign countries while in Pakistan one doctor has to examine 200 patients a day at OPD.

He said around 800 to 900 patients visit Emergency Department - 400 of them are treated in main emergency while others in Children Emergency Ward, Burns Hospital and Mother and Child Emergency Unit. app
