New FC College in making
Lahore, June 30, 2008: A new FC College is in the making in the garb of Government College, Township where the premier FC's faculty and 300 to 400 left over students were shifted in 2003 while handing over assets and property of the FC College, Gulberg to the Church, now a private chartered university. By transferring the faculty and students to new building of Teachers Training College Lahore Township, the government claimed that the old college was not closed down but it virtually vanished as only a few hundred students joined the new premises while the labs, library, equipment and other essential items were not shifted to the new premises. It was left in doldrums till the college stood on its feet last year. After a traumatic hand over in 2003, the faculty through hard work and devotion over the successive years transformed the institution to the present status in which it fetched an enrolment of 4,000 students in the morning and evening classes and the postgraduate classes in five disciplines.

Verily the college has the capacity to rebuild and grow an institution par excellence capable of filling the vacuum created by the missing FC College and to remain in the mainstream of legendary colleges of the city. This is obvious because the faculty is committed to regain the past glory in such a manner that the students may opt to take admission in this college by choice and not by any compulsion. It is no more to remain a side or peripheral college but in the lineage of excellent institutions of the city.

Of the present faculty members, 16 are PhD degree holders different subjects while equal number of them are M Phil degree holders. This is the rare distinction available to no other college of total 428 colleges in Punjab government sector. Principal Dr Ijaz Butt himself a PhD degree holder in political science has exposure of teaching in universities such as University of Peshawar and GCU, Lahore and Command and Staff College, Quetta.

The college is located in the proximity of localities like Green Town, Sattu Katla, Pindi Rajputan and posh areas of Johar Town, Vallentia and WAPDA Town etc where a good postgraduate college is badly needed.
The present premises also have easy approach and logistically convenient to the students.

The other reason this institution need to grow is the initiative taken by the faculty to start equal number of traditional masters programme in Township college as were in the old F C College. These were economics, mathematics, english, political science and urdu. As there was no building, the Principal's residence has been converted into postgraduate block while the Principal volunteered to vacate and live in his nearby ancestral home. In addition to Masters programmes, it has ICS, I Com, pre-engineering, pre-medical, general science and arts in intermediate level totalling 1400 students.

The Government College, Township is among the few colleges which speared ahead in introducing second shift at all levels where visiting faculty in addition to 147 regular teachers are available to teach both the shifts.

The college attracted the students and parents to secure admission here. The most attractive are I Com and pre-engineering programmes.

Now what is needed to be done is the construction of additional class rooms. There are at present 12 classrooms and over 55 are needed. The library is housed in a small room obviously with little books. There are no laboratories of any science subject. It needed biology, botany, zoology and chemistry labs. It also lacks postgraduate block, an Auditorium, a playground, a transport fleet for transportation of students particularly girls of postgraduate classes and shortage of office staff. It needed rationalization of teachers' strength according to enrolment ratio. The adjacent spacious ground of City District Government can be handed over to the college for better utility and maintenance and for promotion of college sports. It needed multi-storey modern building and face lift of roads and lanes of the college, boundary wall and peripheral roads. The government embarked upon a project of 300 million to be completed in three years time of which Rs 5.70 crore are to be spent this year on the construction of 12 class rooms but the project is yet to be launched and that too is insufficient.
