Pakistan Academy of Letters to celebrate 100th birth anniversary of Faiz in 2011

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) is all set to celebrate Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s hundredth birth anniversary in the year 2011 by holding a string of literary activities across the globe and paying tribute to one of the renowned modern Urdu poets, said PAL Chairman Fakhar Zaman on Tuesday during a meeting with writers at the academy.

He said the activities would feature publication of a voluminous book on Faiz, issuance of memorial ticket, organisation of seminars and translation of Faiz’s poetry into languages approved by the UNISECO. He said the PAL would also organise two international conferences to mark birth and death anniversaries of Faiz, wherein president and prime minister of Pakistan would participate.

He said the PAL would screen special documentaries and hold stage dramas and musical programmes at different venues to highlight life, achievements and philosophy of Faiz.

He said Faiz, being the voice of poor people’s conscience, added a unique flavour to Urdu lyrics and poems by harmonising modern sensibility and classical tone and promoting this genre.
