HEC Scholarships for Fata students crash course

Scholarships for Fata students: Arrangements finalized for crash course

Peshawar, June 03: Arrangements have been finalised to conduct a crash course for the students of Federally Administered Tribal Areas, who want to avail scholarships announced for them by the Higher Education Commission.

The HEC with the administrative support of Fata Education Directorate has launched the third phase of the scholarship programme for undergraduate and postgraduate Fata students to provide them with the opportunities at par with the rest of the country.

The initiative is a part of "Provision of higher education opportunities for students of Balochistan and Fata" project, launched by the federal government to provide financial assistance to 1,300 undergraduate and 700 postgraduate students over a period of seven years in some of the leading national institutions.

Similarly, the project also integrates 10 PhD journalists belonging to Fata in international universities.

A statement issued by the Fata Information Directorate here on Wednesday, said that arrangements had been finalised to conduct a 'foundation course' at Peshawar for Fata students aspiring to take undergraduate studies at some of the leading national institutions.

It stated that the four to six weeks crash course was aimed at enhancing the analytical, writing and comprehension skills of the students in Mathematics, English, Pakistan Affairs and Islamic Studies to prepare them to compete in the selection test for the award of scholarships, which would be advertised later.

All the expenses of the foundation course would be borne by the HEC in addition to provision of Rs5,000 to each participant as stipend.

It said that the scholarship awards would be initially valid for one semester, four months, to four years in case of undergraduate and two years for postgraduate programmes, subject to satisfactory performance of the scholars.

The tuition fees will be paid directly to the partner institutions while other allowances will be payable to the scholars on quarterly basis.

The statement said that 90 per cent scholarships would be awarded to those students, who had passed their higher secondary examinations from the schools situated within the tribal areas, falling under the 'Fata in' category.

"The remaining 10 per cent seats have been reserved for 'Fata out' applicants," the statement said. It said that scholarships would be awarded purely on merit in a transparent manner for which a competitive testing mechanism was already in place.

"Fata has no dearth of talented and hardworking youth.

Given the opportunities, they can rise to the highest ranks in academic and intellectual pursuits," it added.

The statement said that application forms, sample question papers and essential details could be accessed and downloaded from the official website of HEC.

It said that under the four-year undergraduate programme, each scholar would be entitled to a tuition grant of Rs20,000 per semester in addition to monthly living allowance of Rs5,000 and annual grants of Rs3,000 and Rs2,000 as stationery and travelling allowance respectively.

Moreover, one time settlement allowance of Rs8,000 will also be paid to each student enrolled under the undergraduate scholarship programme.

As far as the postgraduate programme is concerned, Rs30,000 per semester per scholar will be paid in addition to Rs6,000 per month as living allowance, Rs5,000 for stationery requirements and Rs2,000 for travelling expenses.

One time funding of Rs10,000 and Rs5,000 will also be given to these postgraduate scholars on account of settlement and thesis charges respectively. Dawn
