Teachers’ training will enhance quality of education
PESHAWAR:26 January: Even as the province gears up to hire hundreds of teachers, particularly at educational institutions in the newly merged tribal districts (NMTDs), the provincial government is looking at training its teachers to enhance the overall quality of education being imparted.

This was suggested by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) Minister Akbar Ayub Khan on Friday as he visited the Provincial Institute for Teacher Education (PITE). He reviewed the programmes offered by PITE and other efforts to enhance student learning levels in the province by producing better teachers.

During his visit, Akbar was briefed by PITE Director Hakimullah about the training programmes being carried out by the institute across K-P.
Hakimullah also provided updates on transfer and posting criteria for the institute and that all shuffling was supervised by a placement committee which was chaired by K-P ESED special secretary.

Akbar urged that the faculty members of PITE should be nominated for training programmes, both local and foreign, to enhance their capacity.

He further called for introducing a virtual system of education in the institute. Moreover, he suggested that every trainee of the institute should be awarded at least a ‘Certificate of Participation’. To ensure that the institute is self-sufficient, he said that PITE should work in such a way that its training programmes can be marketed, especially so that the private sector can also benefit from PITE’s interventions.

The K-PESED has undertaken several critical reforms to support teachers to teach effectively in the last few years. The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and Induction Programmes are key initiatives which have been scaled up to a large scale through a blended learning approach.

The CPD programme has been created based on student assessment results and weaknesses as identified in the sample-based assessments for grades II and V. Results of grade V assessment show that CPD has positively impacted scores in English, Math, and Science as the programme seeks to improve teacher content knowledge and teaching practices.

The Induction Programme helped newly-inducted teachers to enhance their content knowledge and pedagogical skills in all the core subject areas. The programme was delivered through an intensive blended learning model following modern teaching practices.

In this regard, for the first time in K-P’s history, digital tablets were distributed amongst the 13,274 newly inducted teachers. These devices had been pre-installed with a tailor-made application for delivering teacher training to primary, elementary and secondary school teachers. The application includes training videos, descriptive materials, modules, content, and self-assessment activities through a specially designed learning management system (LMS).

For 2019-20, PITE has trained over 56,000 primary school teachers through its CPD programme. In its induction programme, nearly 14,000 newly-hired teachers were trained. Express turbuni.
