Dissemination Event at LCWU

Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) organised a dissemination event for its link project “Studies on Fluoride and Arsenic Contamination of Drinking Water in and Around Lahore, Pakistan: A Growing Threat to Human Health” last week.

LCWU Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences, Dr Kauser Jamal Cheema, briefed the participants about the research project, saying it was funded by DelPHE (DFID) UK and was managed by British Council Pakistan.

She said it was a link project among three different universities including LCWU, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dhaka and University College London (UCL) UK.

Dr Cheema said that the overall goals and objectives of the project included research for data generation regarding fluoride and arsenic contamination of drinking water in and around Lahore, carrying out integrated and coherent scientific studies with focus on public awareness to address the issues of fluoride and arsenic contamination of drinking water, provision of basis for developing control measures and prevention procedures for groups and population at risk and to create awareness among public about important environmental issues to reduce environmental deterioration.

Highlighting problems faced during launch of the project, Dr Cheema said the project was to start from November 2006, but in August 2007, it was informed that the project year was to be considered from September 1, 2006 to August 2007.

Budget for year-1 activities was released in March 2007 so many months were lost for sorting out money matters.

Prof Dr Muhammad Delwar Hossain from Department of Civil Engineering, BUET Dhaka and VC LCWU Prof Dr Bushra Mateen also spoke on the occasion.

Besides LCWU faculty members and students, those prominent among the participants included VC of the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (UVAS), Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz, and Dr M Atiqur Rehman.
