20 Pakistani educators return from America

Islamabad:A delegation of 20 Pakistani educators returned home on Friday from the US after completion of a four-week training course at the Plymouth State University (PSU), New Hampshire, taking the tally of master trainers to 120.

The Pakistan Educational Leadership Institute (PELI) hosted the training for Pakistani educators in the university, which was jointly funded by Idara-e-Taleem-o-Agahi (ITA).

Latest teaching skills were imparted to the Pakistani educators during the training session. It was the sixth delegation of Pakistani educators who have attended this programme.

Funded by a grant from the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the ITA-PSU partnership began in 2004 with the training of twenty Pakistani teachers at PELI.

ITA chairperson Bela Jamil said, “The multiplier effect of these training programmes is enormous. All PELI Alumni are recognized as master trainers and receive certificates of professional development upon completion of their training.

“The role of the PELI Alumni is not limited to teachers’ training. Indeed, as part of the PSU programme, they have to introduce a new initiative in their own school or region.”

She said most of PSU alumni are female teachers and ITA is proud to welcome home this year’s cohort of PELI 2009 Alumni, adding the vision and skills they bring to the education sector would surely create an enormous improvement.

The Master Action Plans (MAPs) are based on a certain theme. This year’s theme focuses on science education, conflict resolution and environmental stewardship.

The MAPS, therefore, seek to implement activities promoting this theme.

“Activities to be undertaken under Master Action Plans include capacity building of teacher training institutions, imparting training to teachers and head teachers, supporting School Improvement Programs in the public sector and raising awareness about environmental issues in schools and communities,” she said.

Bela said since the Pakistan Educational Leadership Institute alumni are mostly from public sector schools with a small number of teachers from non-elite private schools and NGOs, the programme brings its benefits to those who need it the most.

The areas from which the alumni have been selected include Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, NWFP, AJK, FATA and Islamabad.THE NEWS
