Punjab Governor holds meeting to acquire land for new universities

LAHORE: Governor Salmaan Taseer presided over a meeting to resolve the property dispute for the acquisition of land for new universities in Bahawalpur at the Governor’s House on Saturday.

The meeting was told the Punjab government had decided to recover around three acres of land from private ownership to provide the 80 acres of pledged land to the Bahawalpur Islamia University and link it to the sub-campus on Gulberg Road in Rahim Yar Khan. It decided the project would develop a new campus for the university at the cost of Rs 415 million.

The meeting also decided to construct a new road on the three acres of acquired land. Bahawalpur Islamia University Vice Chancellor Dr Bilal A Khan, Board of Revenue Member Colonies Tariq Yousaf, Principal Secretary to Governor Ahmed Nawaz Sukhaira, the Rahim Yar Khan revenue executive district officer and various other concerned officials were present on the occasion.

The vice chancellor told the meeting the assessment work on 50 acres of land for the sub-campus in Bahawalpur had been completed. The governor ordered to start the levelling work on 600 acres of land acquired to construct the Baghdad-e-Jadeed Campus of the University College of Veterinary Sciences in Bahawalpur.
