Research study: Governor approves policy to eliminate plagiarism


PESHAWAR (March 08 2010): Governor NWFP Owais Ahmad Ghani, who is also Chancellor of the University of Peshawar (UoP), has in principally approved more concrete policy to eliminate chances of plagiarism, introduce more sophisticated system to identify any malpractice in this respect and ensure upholding of moral values to achieve the desired standard of research studies.

In this connection the Senate of UoP met under the Chairmanship of NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani at Governors House on Sunday. The Secretary to Governor, Sikander Qayum and the Provincial Secretary Higher Education, Atta-ur-Rehman Lodhi were also present on this occasion with the Vice Chancellor of the UoP Prof Dr Azmat Hayat briefed the meeting about working of the institution.

The meeting, after having a heated debate also conceded to a proposal to enact new laws for award of more strict punishment to the students, if found guilty of committing plagiarism in the research studies.

It was stressed that the management of the university should acquire latest computer software and modern systems to detect malpractices in examination system and ensure complete transparency in conduct of research studies. The meeting also discussed administrative matters in certain cases and approved suggested measures to further streamline working of the respective offices. Issues relating to selection of faculty members under tenure track system in line with the prescribed policy also came under discussion and the meeting was informed that enactment of amendments in the respective statutes of the university is already under way, after which the cases would be recommended to the concerned quarters for necessary action.

The meeting also approved budgetary estimates for the Year-2009-10 and revised budget for the Year, 20089.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor welcomed the realistic and pragmatic approach of the members of the senate to ensure complete transparency in all respects in the working of university and assured every possible support and patronage in materialising the proposed projects of introducing most modern systems for ensuring complete transparency in its programmes.

This approach, the Governor said, itself is a depiction of reality, that we have the ability to analyses the situation in a realistic way and face the difficulties courageously. The academic community of our educational institutions, the Governor said, is well-educated, respectful and honourable members of our society and we are confident that they would maintain the highest degree of moral values.

The Governor also invited the attention of the faculty towards the problems of extremism and terrorism and said, though we have succeeded in restoring writ of the government to a great extent, yet, he added, we must also be conscious to reality that rehabilitation of the society is a much bigger challenge in the respective areas. For us, he remarked, it is a time to retrospective as well and there is need to realise the gravity of the problems in true sense and bring a positive change in the mind set of the elements involved in extremism and terrorism. The universities, the Governor said, are the best forums to debate the confronting issues in a realistic way and come out with solutions. He also conceded to a proposal to enhance budgetary allocations for holding seminars, conferences, symposiums and debates at the campus especially on various current issues and assured every possible support for provision of resources in this respect.RECORDER REPORT
