NUST CONVOCATION

Islamabad: It is heartening to see that NUST has emerged as pioneer in all sciences, be it engineering, IT or business administration, producing so many female engineers, which is a good combination of gender mix.

This was stated by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani while speaking as the chief guest at the 14th undergraduate convocation of the College of EME, National University of Science & Technology (NUST) here Monday.

He further said that NUST has been nurturing young engineers to be professionally and ethically sound, ensuring to instil in them the spirit of teamwork and cooperative attitude. The prime minister announced a four-point agenda for the development of science and technology (S&T) and promotion of knowledge-based economy with an objective to accelerate the pace of economic growth. "The government intends to review the policy on S&T with an objective of betterment of masses and speeding up economic activities to generate more job opportunities for young people," he said. He said under this agenda, the existing system of S&T institutions besides higher education would be strengthened with laying greater emphasis on promoting quality research.

The prime minister said the top most priority of the government would be to strengthen the existing institutions involved in research and development (R&D) activities both in public and private sectors.

"Emphasis will be laid on quality research with required strategic and financial support together with overall improvement in the environment for R&D activities," he added. Gilani said that capacity building of manpower in research development centres would be conducted with an emphasis on improving qualitative research. "Such research will be undertaken in universities and other public and private sector institutions as well as international agencies of repute," he added.

He said the establishment of strong linkages with private sector would be made with an aim to ensure prompt transfer of R&D recommendations for value addition in the manufacturing sector. "To this effect, bilateral and multilateral agreements with foreign countries will be effected for technology commensurate with our national economic requirements," he added.

Rector NUST Lieutenant-General Mohammad Asghar while speaking on the occasion said that universities create knowledge and help create wealth. The College of EME is one of the oldest constituent colleges of NUST. The university has become one of the top 500 universities in the world. Its laboratories have been updated by spending 26 million dollars by Islamic Development Bank. About 200 students are studying abroad for their PhDs and about 100 will return home this year.

Earlier, a welcome address was given by Major-General Najeeb Tariq, Commandent College of EME. He said the College of EME (NUST) enjoys international recognition and reputation for imparting quality education. Besides offering bachelors degrees, the college also offers masters and PhD degree programmes in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Systems, Software and Mechatronics Engineering. He appreciated the support of NUST, HEC and Ministry of Science & Technology to sponsor 35 projects of the university.

Later, a batch of 218 engineers were conferred upon degrees under which 55 were from Mechanical Engineering, 52 from Computer Engineering, 54 were from Mechatronics Engineering and 57 were from Electrical Engineering. Outstanding students were awarded gold medals.
