Universities in Sindh scramble adjust Time Tables

Karachi:Universities have been caught unawares by the sudden steps taken by the government for power preservation in the country and are scrambling to adjust their timetable accordingly.

Commenting on the measures taken by the government, a vice chancellor of a university called it a “Nadir Shahi Hukm” (edict from Nadir Shah of Persia who massacred citisen of Delhi during Mughal period).

Pro-Vice Chancellor University of Karachi (KU) Dr Nasiruddin Khan confirmed that according to the government orders, the university will remain closed on Saturdays. He added that the rescheduling of examinations, arranging the credit hours and duration of classes will be announced after a meeting that is scheduled for Monday.

Dr Khan said that activation of two sub-stations of 1000 KV capacity each had already ended the internal loadshedding at the university. “The KESC is mostly generous to the KU and we have adequate power supply through the high tension line (HTL) (that supplies power to Scheme 33) passing through the university”.

The office timings from now onwards (Monday to Friday) will be from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm with one hour break for prayer and lunch i.e. from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm (Monday to Thursday) and on Friday from 1:00 to 2:30 pm.

Meanwhile, Registrar NED University of Engineering & Technology Prof Javed Aziz Khan told The News that the university will open on Saturday as, according to him, they had no direct communication from the chancellor’s secretariat. “We might close the university on Saturday if we get intimation from them (chancellor’s secretariat)”.

Prof Khan said that the NED university was working from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and now they will have to adopt 8:00 am to 4:00 pm thus increasing the teaching time to one-and-a-half-hour.

Vice Chancellor Jinnah University For Women (JUW) Dr Riaz Ahmed Hashmi said that his university will open on Saturday (today) as they had planned an event for the formation of girl scouts in the university. “We will have to decide about the credit hours management and rescheduling of the examinations in a few days. We were open up to 3:30 pm but now we will have to advance the time to 4:30 or 5:00 pm. It will be a problem for our students who have to commute to long distances while returning to their homes”, he pointed out.
